Scientists at Georgia Tech University, tries to recreate the course of evolution in laboratory inspired by the movie “Jurassic Park”, they want to see if, indeed, “life will find a way” to repeat the sequence mutation and selection that led to the emergence of life today.
The experiment is done on the bacteria of the species Escherichia coli (E. coli), widespread in the environment and lives including human intestine.
Researchers have synthesized a gene called EF-Tu in its ancestral, as it was 500 million years ago, and have inserted it into E. coli cells in place of EF-Tu gene modern, which has a different structure from that ancient, after long evolution.
They want to see evolution in action and find out if gene will follow the same evolutionary path to reach its modern form, or if there will be a “route” different.
They refer to their experiment as “a bacterial Jurassic Park” metaphor refers to the famous 1993 film made by Steven Spielberg, the same idea is to implant genes into cells ancient forms of modern life, to recreate the past .
